What are Apple Deployment Programs?
Apple Deployment Programs are a suite of programs that help you do the following:
Device Enrollment Program (DEP): Automate enrollment of Apple devices into a mobile device managementsolution to streamline deployment.
Volume Purchase Program (VPP): Purchase apps and books in volume and distribute apps to devices (with iOS 9 or later, or OS X 10.11 or later) and apps and books to users.
Each of these programs is described separately, so you can learn how each program works and which one is best for your situation.
Note: To see whether an Apple program is available in your country or region, go to the Apple Support article Availability of Apple programs for education and business.
Device Enrollment Program overview
The Device Enrollment Program (DEP) provides a fast, streamlined way to deploy iOS and macOS devices that your business has purchased directly from Apple or from a participating Apple Authorized Reseller or carrier. You can automatically enroll devices in MDM without having to physically touch or prep the devices before users get them. And with MDM, you can further simplify the setup process for users by removing specific steps in the Setup Assistant, so users are up and running quickly.
You can also control whether or not the user can remove the MDM profile from the device. For example, you can order the devices from Apple, configure all the management settings, and have the devices shipped directly to the users’ home address. Once the device is unboxed and activated, the device enrolls in your MDM and all management settings, apps, and books are ready for the user.
The process is simple: After enrolling in the program, administrators log in to the program website, link one or more MDM servers to the DEP account, and then associate specific devices to one of the MDM servers. The devices can then be assigned to users via MDM. Once a device is activated, any MDM-specified configurations, restrictions, or controls are automatically installed.

Volume Purchase Program overview
The App Store and iBooks Store feature thousands of great apps and books that users can purchase, download, and install. The Volume Purchase Program (VPP) gives businesses a simple way to purchase apps and books in volume and distribute apps to devices (with iOS 9 or later, or OS X 10.11 or later) and apps and books to employees or contractors. Apps and books on the App Store and iBooks Store are eligible for purchase under the program.
The Volume Purchase Program for Business lets you get custom B2B apps for iOS, custom-built for you by third-party developers and downloaded privately from the VPP store.
Mobile device management (MDM) solutions, like Profile Manager, part of the Server app, can be integrated with VPP, letting your business purchase apps in volume and assign them to devices or specific users. When a device or user no longer needs an app, you can use MDM to revoke and reassign it to a different device or user. You can purchase books in volume, but once they’re distributed to users, books remain the property of the recipient and aren’t revocable or reassignable.
You can also integrate the VPP with Apple Configurator 2, so apps can be installed and assigned to devices. For more information, see Apple Configurator 2 Help.
